Bellator 73 is taking place on August 24, 2012 from the Harrah’s Tunica Hotel and Casino in Tunica resorts, Mississippi. But the original main event of a Featherweight Title bout between Pat Curran (17-4) vs Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (17-1) will not be taking place due to a broken orbital bone suffered by Curran during a boxing sparring section. The injury will need several months to heal.
With this happening on such short notice, Bellator has elected to move the season 6 Bantamweight final between Marcos “Loro” Galvao (12-5-1) vs Luis Alberto “Betao” Nogueira (12-2) to the main event spot. The winner of that fight will be the first challenger to Bellator Bantamweight Champion Eduardo Dantas.
Without a bout Curran must be disappointed to not be making his title defense. But for now all Curran can do is wait, heal, and come back ready to fight.
For Freire this has to be incredibly disappointing he has not been in the cage since May 21 of 2011 when he won the second ever Bellator Featherweight Tournament.
