Chael Sonnen’s climb to a title shot at Light Heavyweight will start off with a rematch 9 years in the making when he faces “The Ultimate Fighter” season 1 winner Forrest Griffin. The bout is expected to take place at UFC 155 that is being targeted for December 29, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sonnen vs Griffin will most likely be the co-main event as the main event is expected to be Cain Velasquez vs Junior Dos Santos II for the UFC Heavyweight title.
Chael Sonnen is (27-12-1) and is a member of Team Quest. Sonnen has the majority of his career wins by decision and has unmatched wrestling skills. Sonnen is on a quest now back at Light Heavyweight for his third title fight in 4 years. Sonnen’s loud and sometimes brash personality has helped thrust him into the UFC spotlight.
Forrest Griffin is the first “The Ultimate Fighter” winner and a former Light Heavyweight champion of the UFC, which makes him a sure thing for the UFC Hall Of Fame. Griffin is a long time member of Extreme Couture. Griffin is (10-5) in his UFC career but is only (3-3) in his last 6. Griffin is coming off a unanimous decision win at UFC 148 in which he won his trilogy of fights with hall of famer Tito Ortiz.
The first time Sonnen and Griffin met in the field of battle was on September 6, 2003 at the IFC Global Domination event, that was a one night tournament. Griffin would defeat Sonnen at 2:25 of round number 1 with a triangle choke. The winner of this fight definitely takes a positive step towards title contention.
