I want to start by saying that I am a fan of UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. He is extremely long, lean, and athletic.  Now, let me explain why I think he is overrated…

There is no argument about whether or not Jones is super talented.  He is. However, it seems as if he is like Brock Lesnar in a way.  When Lesnar came onto the scene, his size and athleticism made him very hard to beat. He would rush you, hit you, knock you down, get on top of you and beat you into a puddle. He was overwhelming and hard to deal with, but then the code was broken.

The Jones situation is a little more complicated, but I think a great deal of his success can be attributed to his build and reach. He easily keeps his opponents on the outside with his punches and kicks. When opponents are able to get in close enough to strike, that only puts them in range the of Jones’ fierce elbows and knees.

Then I take issue with who Jones has beaten. Let’s look at his most recent victories. Brandon Vera! Vladimir Matyushenko…  Ryan Bader, whose loss to Jones was followed by a loss to Tito Ortiz. Mauricio Rua, who has split matches with Machida & Griffin and beat Mark Coleman & Vera. Rampage Jackson, whose loss to Jones was followed by a loss to Bader. Lyoto Machida, who has lost 3 of his last 5, split matches with Rua, lost to Jackson and beat Couture & Bader. Finally, Jones won a decision victory over Evans. Evans, who won a decision over Phil Davis & Jackson and lost to Machida. Impressive? Apparently, to most people.

I said all that to say this…

I am excited to see the Jones vs. Henderson fight coming up. I’m not sure if Hendo has what it takes to beat Jones, but I know that it is just a matter of time before someone figures it out. I have no doubt that Jones will be at the top of the heap for many years to come.  Jones is young. When he does lose, he will bounce right be back. I just don’t think that he is unstoppable or will have a run like Anderson Silva.
