After an intense 6 round sparring session with Archie Ray Marquez at the Team Tapia gym we catch up with Matthew “The Champ” Baca to see how the last 3 weeks of camp has been. “The Champ” is preparing for a December 7, 2012 bout against Derek Perez at the Route 66 Casino as part of the Fire and Ice card.
A great sparring session out there with you and Archie Ray, how did it feel getting the work in?
Felt great Archie’s ready to fight, I’m feeling better it was a great 6 rounds.
6 hard fought rounds, just from the action we have seen recently around town that was better that was better than some of the fights and I got to commend both of you on that.
Archie Ray’s fight is two weeks out how do you think he’s looking with the work you guys put in?
He’s sharp, he’s ready to fight more than ready, and he’s going to do great of the 17th.
We talked to you several weeks ago, how do you feel you’ve progressed from than to now?
I’m just getting in better and better shape, getting rid of all that ring rust and I’m ready to fight, I’m ready for December 7, 2012
December 7, Fire and Ice, any new thoughts on your opponent Derek Perez?
I still don’t know much about him, but I’m ready for the 7th.
Where do you think you’re going to go in the next four weeks from where you are now, what are you expecting?
In the next four weeks sharpening up and getting in even better shape and by the 7th be more than ready.
Can you talk a little bit about the sparring you been doing, the work you been getting in with other fighters, how has that been helping you?
I’ve been sparring a lot with Archie this is like my third or fourth time sparring with him and we been going good rounds and today was I’d say the best sparring yet.
From where you and your coaches lay out the game plan everything leading up to December 7, how much on point are you with that plan right now?
We’re right on track perfect I couldn’t be any happier, I’m glad with the way things are going with my team, with Fresquez and the way everything is going.
With Fresquez any other kind of stuff you’re going to be seeing you at?
I’m focused on December 7th after that will talk about that, but right now it’s just December 7, 2012.
Give you a minute to sell the fight anything else you have to say about the fight?
No. Just everyone come out and check it out. It’s going to be a great night for boxing, New Mexico Boxing is back December 7th and Matthew Baca is back and I’m ready.
