Summary

The Last Punch Heavy Duty Punching Bag is a low-cost bag that ships from Amazon UNFILLED. You can fill it with whatever material you desire but this canvas bag shouldn’t be filled with more than 70 pounds of filler and should be used by beginners only.

Rating: We’ve given the Last Punch Heavy Duty Punching Bag a 3 star rating. We loved the IDEA of this bag – but the reality was so disappointing. It’s a mess to fill, it’s not very sturdy and the canvas shell is not as nice as it should be.

Features & Benefits

Last Punch is a generic brand sold on Amazon. At $25 this unfilled bag is a really cheap, and tempting, way to add a heavy bag to your exercise routine. The canvas bag ships empty with heavy duty chains for hanging and a large zipper top for filling the bag with the material of your choosing. The bag is just over 33 inches tall which makes it perfect for punching workouts. With chains the bag will hang a total of 50″. It’s about 18″ in diameter.

Canvas Shell, Shipped Empty

Canvas is long-known as a heavy duty material for carrying items and being durable. This bag seems to meet that same definition. The white canvas is sturdy and provided a tough punching surface for our testers. The bag ships from Amazon without any filler or any other accessories other than the chains used to hang it. The benefit to this is that the canvas should hold just about any type of material we decide to put in the bag and will last a long time.

Most people fill the bag with rags, old t-shirts, plastic bags or other forgiving materials in addition to a more weighty material like sand, water, gravel or weights in the center. You can build the bag to your liking.

But the canvas is also a tough opponent and we don’t recommend punching this bag with your bare hands.

Decent Beginner Punching Bag

Last Punch has created a nice little entry level bag and nothing more. The chains used for hanging the bag are very sturdy and could support weight up to about 70 lbs. This would put it on the level of most beginner punchers and hitters lighter than 140 lbs. For someone looking to get started it could be a good beginner bag at a lower price.

These are the benefits, but how do you know if it’s right for you?

Testing the Last Punch Heavy Duty Punching Bag

If you want to get the full benefits of a heavy bag workout, you need to make sure you get the best bag for your money. More importantly you have to find the bag that will work BEST for you and how you will use it. Ultimately you have to consider a few things when shopping for a heavy bag (get more detail in our Heavy Bag Buying Guide).

The first thing you should consider is the size of the bag which is based off your weight and experience level. A good hack for this is to get a bag that is about 1/2 your weight.

When we’re testing a heavy bag we focus on the shell material because it’s what you’ll be pounding on for the next few years. You want something that will hold up to the abuse and not burst open – not to mention you need the cover to be sewn together VERY well. So we look at the shell material and the fill material.

The filler is what will take all of those strikes so you want something that is durable, has a realistic feel, is uniform the entire length of the bag but is forgiving enough that you don’t injure yourself while working out. Cover and fill will contribute to the next thing we look for in a heavy bag test – durability. How long will the bag last and will it work today and in three years? We usually like to have a few different professional fighters test our bags for a few weeks to give us feedback.

Some manufacturers back their bags with a warranties. This is the final thing we consider when testing/buying a hanging heavy bag, the support and warranty.

Our Findings & Rating

PROS: $25 as tested, self-filled so YOU control the weight, FREE SHIPPING!
CONS: Weak seams, fragile zipper, self-filled nightmare, can’t really fill it with “whatever you want”.

We are well-known spendthrifts here at KNUXX. Many of our testers and fighters come from modest backgrounds where filling a canvas duffel bag full of rags and hanging it from a rope in the backyard seemed like a natural first step in our training. In fact, many of the people on our street growing up had this setup!

Given our roots it’s easy to fall into the trap of looking for the cheapest option when searching for a “first” punching bag. The Last Punch bag is really just one step above the duffel bag option.

At a tested price of $25 and Free Shipping w/ Prime! this bag is tough to ignore. So we read a few of the reviews and decided to give it a once over.

Many of the users of this bag found that the bottom seams weren’t very strong if you wanted to fill the bag with more than 50 pounds of material. They even recommended duct taping the bottom seams before the first use just to make sure the bottom didn’t fall out of it.

Honestly, that’s not a very good sign up front.

The bag ships empty and the shipping weight is just over 3 lbs. Most of that weight comes from the heavy duty chains that come with the bag. The chains can probably hold a lot more weight than the canvas bag would ever hold. Plus two points for chain overkill!

The canvas is sturdy but it looks like the weak points are all in the seams and the zipper on the top. In our research we found many users had the same complaint – the canvas held well but the seams blew out. Of course we don’t know what they used as filler nor how heavy their bags were, but it was a pretty consistent complaint.

The canvas is strong enough to hold a heavy base material, like sand or gravel, to add some quick weight without taking up too much space. If you want to go this route we would recommend putting the sand in individual bags of about 5 lbs and putting them in the center of the bag and fill the rest of the bag with rags or shredded fabric of some sort.

One guy even mentioned that he went to a playground supply place and found some shredded tires to put in his bag. We liked this idea so that’s what we decided we would use as well. We thought this would be better than trying to cram pillow or blankets into the small opening at the top.

The zipper on the top opens just large enough so you can put a couple hands into the bag and move stuff around. It’s enough room to add filler but not quite enough to give you easy access to add whatever you want. And they weren’t kidding about the zipper being fragile, it’s not very durable.

Filling the bag to about 50 lbs we were able to go a couple rounds with it and were pretty impressed that it didn’t blow apart right away. But I’m sure it would given more time. This bag is probably best for kids. It’s a fun and cheap entry-level bag but it’s almost more of a pain to find filling and baby the bag to make it worth buying. Also, the fact that it’s canvas means we can’t take it outside except for on nice days.

Being a natural material it wouldn’t be recommended to put this bag outside as mold, mildew and rot would occur.

A final negative for this bag is that it doesn’t have a loop or hook on the bottom to which you can attach a tether to keep it from swinging. So if you make it light and then hit it hard you have to watch out for the back swing!

Who should get this?

Who should get the Last Punch Heavy Duty Punching Bag? This would be a great beginner bag and a good bag for kids. Probably kids under 12 years old. You could fill it with 40 pounds of material and have many hours of use. Used in this way it’s a great bag.

Who should avoid it?

Adults. Heavy hitters. Anyone who doesn’t want to mess with finding your own filler for the heavy bag.
